Best picnic spots in Brisbane — and where to grab supplies nearby

Brisbane is a picnic city ten months of the year — the winters are sunny, the river bends past half a dozen great lawns, and there is always a deli within walking distance of the rug. The real skill is pairing the spot with the supply run. Here is how locals do both.

The riverside classics

• New Farm Park — the gold standard: enormous fig trees, rose gardens, river frontage and the Powerhouse at the far end. Stock up along the New Farm deli strip on Brunswick Street on the way in.
• Orleigh Park, West End — the west-facing riverbank locals guard jealously. Sunset over the water, CityCat terminal at the edge, and all of West End's grocers and bakeries five minutes behind you.
• South Bank parklands — the tourist option, and still a good one: lawns, Streets Beach, and the whole South Bank food strip when the picnic runs dry.

Spots with a skyline view

The Kangaroo Point cliffs are Brisbane's postcard: the full CBD skyline across the water, barbecues along the clifftop, and city lights after dark that turn a picnic into an evening. Pick up supplies in Kangaroo Point or walk across from the Gabba end of Woolloongabba. On the north side, the Mt Coot-tha lookout trades river for horizon — the whole city grid at your feet, best at dusk.
