Magpie swooping spots in Brisbane

Every spring, a small number of male magpies defend their nests by swooping anyone who walks or rides too close — and every Brisbane local has a street they just don't go down in September. This is a crowd-sourced heads-up map: the spots we know about, plus the ones you report. Swooping season runs roughly August to November.

The war zones

The fiercest reported spots — worth planning around while the season is on.

How to get through swooping season

  • Magpies remember faces and hold a grudge for weeks — if one has you marked, take a different route.
  • They almost always swoop from behind. Watching them face-on, or wearing sunglasses on the back of your head, genuinely helps.
  • On a bike, dismount and walk — swoopers target fast movement, and a fall is the real danger, not the beak.
  • Don't fight back or harass the nest. It makes the bird more defensive next year, and magpies are protected.
  • It only lasts about six weeks per nest. Once the chicks fledge, the swooping stops.

Reports are from locals and are checked before they go public — treat them as a friendly heads-up, not a guarantee. Magpies are a protected native species; the point of this map is to help you avoid them, not the other way around.
