International FASD Awareness Day

Story Bridge will be lit Red to support International FASD Awareness DayFoetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong disability caused by prenatal alcohol exposure and is the leading non-genetic developmental disability in Australia and the western world. Each year, more children are born with FASD than with Autism, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome combined. The 9th day of the 9th month was chosen as International FASD Awareness Day, symbolising the nine months of pregnancy and the importance of avoiding alcohol during this time to prevent FASD. The National Organisation for Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (NOFASD) has been Australia's peak body for more than 25 years, supporting individuals and families living with FASD and promoting awareness, prevention, diagnosis, and improved outcomes. Throughout September (FASD Awareness Month), we intensify our efforts to raise community awareness of FASD, including wearing red shoes, socks and clothing and lighting up public landmarks in red to spark conversations about FASD.This Light Up is organised by: NOFASD Australia Limited
