Live music in Brisbane: venues worth leaving the house for

Brisbane's live music history punches far above the city's size — this is the town that produced The Saints, Powderfinger and half the acts on your festival posters. The scene still runs hot, and it is unusually concentrated: one precinct carries most of the load, with a handful of beloved institutions scattered around it.

Fortitude Valley: the engine room

Fortitude Valley is one of Australia's few dedicated entertainment precincts, and its centrepiece is The Fortitude Music Hall — a 3,000-plus capacity room on Brunswick Street that pulls the mid-size international tours Brisbane used to miss. Around it, the Valley's bar strip keeps smaller stages lit most nights: Black Bear Lodge for indie rooms, The Bowery for late cocktails with a soundtrack, and a dozen more within stumbling distance — browse the Valley's bars and venues on the map to plan a crawl.

The institutions

  • Brisbane Jazz Club — perched on the river at Kangaroo Point since 1972, still the city's home of swing, bebop and Sunday-evening standards. Small room, big history; book ahead.
  • Lefty's Old Time Music Hall on Caxton Street — honky-tonk, rhinestones and country-leaning acts in a room that looks like a saloon collided with a chandelier shop. Exactly as fun as it sounds.
  • The Brisbane Powerhouse at New Farm — the converted power station on the river hosts everything from jazz festivals to comedy; the surrounding New Farm dining strip makes it a full night out.

Finding something on tonight

The reliable pattern: Thursday to Saturday the Valley always has multiple rooms going; Sunday afternoons belong to the jazz club and pub sessions; midweek is for the smaller stages. Doors are typically 7–8pm with support acts first — check each venue's socials for lineups, and use what's open now to find a feed or a nightcap near the venue after the encore.
